Ten Lip Products to Try for Fall

As much as it pains me to say goodbye to the long, sunny days of summer, I think I'm finally ready to embrace all things fall. Yes, bring on the blanket scarves, the plaid shirts, and everything pumpkin spice. I'm a New Englander, and when the leaves start to turn its hard to not find yourself getting swept up in that autumnal spirit.

One of the first places I turn to welcome each new season is my everyday lip collection. While it's true that there are no rules in makeup, I personally find it fun to change up shades and textures at different times of the year. Which, for right now, means trading in my peaches, corals, and vibrant pinks for rich reds, warm nudes, bold berries, and rusty hues. After spending a good amount of time swatching and playing with a somewhat ridiculous number of lipsticks, I've got ten gorgeous shades to share with you. From your classic mattes to sheer glosses, I think there's a little something here for everyone!

I do have to say, as much as I am a fan of a long-wearing, matte liquid lipstick, I'm kind of relieved that the 2017 makeup trends seem to be incorporating a lot more hydrating formulas. One of my absolute favorites is the Dose of Colors Lip it Up Satin Lipsticks ($17), which are intensely pigmented yet moisturizing, and have THE most gorgeous rose gold packaging to boot. I think Cinnamon Swirl is the perfect shade for fall, which is a deeper nude with ever so slightly rusty undertones that are a little more unique than your standard mauve.

Speaking of hydration, if you're someone that enjoys rocking a minimal makeup look and appreciates a good glossy lip, the Butter London Sheer Wisdom Lush Lip Oils ($22) are one of the most comfortable, non-sticky, non-greasy formulas I've tried in a long time. I've been all about the shade Cinnamon Spice, which is basically like the Dose of Colors shade I mentioned previously, but in a gloss form. You can easily layer this product on top of a lipliner or lipstick if you want more pigmentation, or wear it on its own for a sheer wash of color.

If you've been curious about dabbling in the whole metallic lip trend, you may want to give Ofra's Long Wearing Liquid Lipstick ($17) in the shade Solero a try! It's molten copper color is so ridiculously pretty, and will make a gorgeous statement for an evening out. While this formula is very pigmented and long wearing, it is definitely not transfer proof. This is the kind of liquid lipstick that stays very comfortable by not completely drying down. So just be aware you may need to reapply after eating and drinking.

Another gorgeous way to get your sparkle on this fall is to try out the Bite Beauty Prismatic Pearl Creme Lip Gloss ($22). While this product looks insanely glittery in the tube, it's actually very wearable, and can easily be worn alone or layered over a lipstick. This formula is a bit on the thick side (similar to the original Bite lip glosses) but is not sticky, and you don't get that gritty feeling that comes along with a lot of shimmery lip products. My current favorite is the shade Rose Pearl, which perfectly captures all of the colors of fall as it shifts in the light.

If you'd rather keep things classic, MAC's Creamsheen Lipstick ($17.50) in the shade Dare You is an excellent choice. It's that quintessential berry-red lipstick that belongs in every fall makeup collection. With a hydrating, creamy finish, this one also is super comfortable and non drying on the lips.

If staying power is what you're after, nothing stays put quite like the Nudestix Magnetic Matte Lip Colors ($24). These lip crayons glide on with ease, but then dry down to no-budge finish. That being said, they actually still feel pretty light and comfortable on the lips, which makes them one of my favorite lip formulas out there! The whole range is pretty gorgeous, but my personal fall pick is Burgundy, which is a deep, muted red that has a little bit of that vampy feel but with a lot more wearability.

If a matte liquid lipstick is your jam, one of my favorite formulas is theBalm Meet Matte Hughes ($17). Number one, this formula smells EXACTLY like a Thin Mint cookie. Number two, they go on fully opaque in one swipe, dry down completely matte, and don't make your lips shrivel up like a prune. My go-to shade is Trustworthy, which is a sort of terracotta red that looks SO stunning on anyone with a warm undertone to their skin.

Another great liquid lipstick formula is Jouer's Long Wear Lip Creme, which also goes on very light and creamy, but dries down to a beautiful matte finish. Brique is, to me, THE perfect red shade for fall. It's so richly pigmented, and deeper than your average "true red" lip, which I think is perfect for channeling your Old Hollywood inner starlet. If you want to make a statement, this lip is it.

On the more affordable side of things, L'Oreal's new Infallible Paints Mattes ($9.99) line has me seriously impressed! The doe-foot applicator makes the ultra-opaque formula a piece of cake to apply. They are, again, not a crumbly, powdery, drying matte formula, but instead feel light and comfortable on the lips. While there are lots of beautiful nudes in the range, I would recommend checking out the shade Cinna-bomb, which is your ultra deep, chocolate brown that is incredibly on-trend for fall!

And last, but certainly not least is perhaps the shade that surprised me most! When I received the Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip ($6) in the shade Mess Around in my September Boxycharm, I was a little unsure how I felt about a greige lip. But having tried it on, I actually really loved the way it looked! Rocking such a cool tone may take you out of your comfort zone, but is actually a refreshing change of pace.

Fall Lip Color Swatches

While I love a good swatch to compare shades side-by-side, I think it's always most helpful to see what they look like on the lips! These shots will also hopefully give you a little inspiration as to how you can pair each shade with different makeup looks.
