Anastasia Beverly Hills Self Made Palette Review

I had been eyeing this palette for weeks. Months, probably. Longing from afar to play with its rich, buttery shadows. All the while I resisted, knowing that I have more eyeshadow palettes than a girl needs in her lifetime. Alas, when my $20 VIB reward card showed up in my mailbox, all of my willpower magically vanished. And now that I have it in my hands, I'm even more in love than I could have expected. This eyeshadow palette is so. good.

SO GOOD.

If you're the kind of person who wants easy, neutral, no fuss makeup, this is probably an entirely unnecessary addition to your collection. However, if you enjoy playing with colors and textures, and appreciate the process of experimenting with different eye looks, this palette is basically a dream.

Look at it in all of its majesty. Have you seen a prettier sight? You can definitely tell that Anastasia Beverly Hills paid a lot of attention to detail when putting this palette together. The packaging is super sleek and sexy, with a textured, gray and black case and silver metal detailing. There's a magnetic closure to keep the cover in place, a large mirror, and a very decent dual sided brush inside. For a palette that retails for under $40 this definitely gets an A for presentation.

And then there were the shadows.

The Self Made Palette has 14 beautifully pigmented shades for you to play with in a variety of colors, shades, textures, and finishes to delight your inner makeup artist. Before I get into the shadows themselves, I want note how greatly appreciate that each of the shades have names, and that they're actually written on the palette itself. This may not seem like it should matter, but as a beauty blogger there is nothing more annoying than trying to create a tutorial and needing to tell your audience, "use this beige-y shade that's third in from the left!" It's awkward, and makes talking to the camera even more challenging than it already is.

Anyway, on to the fun part - swatching the heck out of this bad boy! The biggest selling point of this palette for me was the shade selection. A lot of colorful palettes are really bold and vibrant, but while a neon green shadow may look killer in the pan, it's probably not something I'll wear on the regular. The Self Made Palette, though, is all about wearable color, and putting a fun twist on classic neutral shades.

First off you have Pink champagne, a rose gold with a titanium finish. My eyes were immediately drawn to this shade from the first time I came across this palette. It's so glittery and gorgeous it's kind of impossible to not pay attention to it. Texture-wise, this is perhaps the least smooth of the shades, and is more of a pressed microglitter than a powder shadow. You'll get a better application patting this on with your fingers than with a brush.

Metallic plum is a smokey purple shade with a shimmery finish. I love using this shade as a crease color, or smudged out along the lower lash line.

Self-Made is a deep bronze with a satin finish. This shade looks great in the crease, or could be worn all over the lid for a more dramatic look.

Witchy is a really interesting shade. It's a sort of khaki gray with a sparkly finish. I like this smoked out in the crease as well.

Blush is a beautiful duo chromatic shade. It has a pinky-purple iridescence over a grayish beige-y base. I really like using this color all over the lid, or as an inner corner highlight.

Blossom is a beautiful metallic pink shade that color be worn all over the lid or in the crease.

Buttery is your quintessential yellow-toned, matte beige shade that is perfect for softening transitions.

Deep Purple is another really striking color from this palette. It's a vibrant amethyst shade with a very light reflective finish. It's got a bit of shimmer without any chunks of actual glitter. A great way to use an adventurous shade like this is to smudge a little bit along your lower lash line to add a subtle pop of color.

Treasure has quickly become my most used shade in this palette. It's a gorgeous metallic champagne shade that's perfect for highlighting the inner corner of the eye.

Hot & Cold is a rusty, warm toned brown with a metallic finish that looks lovely blended out in the crease.

Sherbert is a velvety matte peach shade that works wonderfully as a base color you can apply all over the lid.

As a lover of all things mint green, Isla has a special place in my heart. This sea foam green shadow has a duochromatic gold finish to it and is a gorgeously unique accent color.

Spirit Rock takes your usual black shadow and amps it up to a whole new level. This shade has a matte black base with tons of pink toned microglitter dispersed throughout. It looks killer as a liner (and is even more intense when used wet).

Last is Hot chocolate, a rich, matte, cocoa brown that is perfect for lining the eyes on those days where black seems a little bit too harsh.

Feeling totally inspired by all of these amazing colors, I've created three different looks for you guys to show you these shadows in action!

This first look is perfect for everyday, and utilizes a lot of rich, warm tones. I started by applying Sherbert all over the lid, then blended Hot & Cold in the crease. I used the shade Buttery along the brow bone and to blend out transition to the crease to avoid any harsh lines. To highlight along the inner corner of the eye I gently patted in the shade Treasure, and then I used Hot Chocolate to line the upper and lower lashes and smoke out at the outermost corner of the eye.

In this next look I wanted something a little more dramatic, and reached for some moody purple and pretty pink hues. To start I applied the shade Blossom all over the lid. Then I blended the shade Witchy into the crease. To line the eyes and add a little depth at the outer V I used the shade Metallic Plum, which I then followed with a deep purple gel liner on my upper lashes only. For the inner corner highlight I patted in the shade Blush (try applying this shade wet for a super intense metallic finish), and I again used Buttery to soften the transition and brighten along the brow bone.

For this last look I did a simple gold eye and added a pop of color. To start I applied the shade Self Made all over the lid and up through the crease. Then, I highlighted the inner third of the eye using the shade Treasure. To add some fun I used a fluffy crease brush to blend the shade Isla along the outer third of the eye. Then, I took a small angled brush to apply the same shade along the lower lash line. Finally, to build up a little more drama, I patted a little bit of Isla on to the outermost corner of my eye to build up the intensity, and applied a dark brown liquid eyeliner.

Regardless of how necessary or unnecessary this purchase was for me, I'm absolutely smitten with this palette. The quality of the shadows is amazing. They all have great pigmentation and blendability, making it insanely easy for you to create your desired look. They also don't have a lot of fall out and will stay put without fading or creasing from morning to night. The price point of this palette is also spot on at $35, making it more affordable than both the LORAC Pro Palettes, IT Cosmetics Naturally Pretty Palettes, or the Urban Decay Naked Palettes.
